Fish Oil Side Effects

Fish oil has always been known to contain omega 3 fatty acids, which are quite beneficial for people suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, bipolar disorder and cancer. In effect, fish oil has become an important part of people’s life as a daily supplement. However, like a coin has two sides, it has been seen that fish oil does contain some side effects too. Now, you must be wondering what these side effects are. Fish oil side effects are not hazardous initially, but if you are taking a consistent dose or an overdose, the consequences can be perilous.

Side Effects of Fish Oil

* When taken in high doses, fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding. It can be in the form of nosebleeds, strokes and blood in the urine. * Heavy metal and other pollutant poisoning is another risk related with fish oil. This is because mercury, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are found in some species of fish. * Upset stomach is another side effect of fish oil. With high does of fish oil, diarrhea can also take place. * Incessant burping and fishy aftertaste are other side effects of fish oil consumption. * Vitamin poisoning is another side effect of fish oil, as it contains certain vitamins, which when ingested in large quantities can be injurious to health. * Heartburn and indigestion have also been seen as the side effects of fish oil.

Any thing that benefits us has a downside. Take prescription medicines, for example - many of them will kill you in excess dosages. Warfarin is the active ingredient of rat poison, yet millions are dependent on it to stave off heart disease and strokes. One should not consider the benefits of ingesting any subastance without also considering its side effects, and vice versa. I would submit that the cost-benefit ratio of fish oil is much higher than practically every prescription drug, yet fish oil is far more powerful than most drugs in warding off disease and keeping the body healthy. Please refer to the hundreds of studies that attest to this, including an article in the JAMA in late 2006.
