Kochi, Monday 1 December 2008: Eighteen nuns and an inmate of a convent in Kottayam have approached the Kerala High Court complaining about “harassment” by the CBI, which is probing the Sister Abhaya case.
The CBI in connection with the case has arrested two priests and a nun.
In a petition filed by Mother Superior General of the S H Mount St Joseph Generalate, Annie John and other nuns, it was stated that under the guise of investigation in the case, they were being “harassed”.
The nuns and the inmate are being compelled to go to distant places for interrogation, it was submitted. This is against the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code, petitioners said.
“A woman police official has also been posted in the convent for observation,” the petition said.
This is against their faith, the petitioners submitted. The petition, which came up before a Division Bench, comprising Justices K Balakrishnan Nair and M C Harirani, has been posted to December 9.
Abhaya’s body was found in the well of the St Pius Convent at Kottayam on March 27, 1992. (Agency)

Murder and the subsequent cover up is within the faith???
Please answer Mother Superior General, Annie John and other nuns.
Dont do more crime in the process of proving a crime. The human rights of the inmates of the convent have to be respected. We are not dealing with a case of terrorist attack like the one which happened recently in Mumbai, but a case in which there is probability that it is a murder, and hence there is no justification in giving basic human rights a go bye. Sr. Abaya and her family should be respected but that should not be ruse to violate the basic rights of many people and to scandalize an order or community.
—Don’t do more crime in the process of proving a crime??? Well Jose Thomas, spreading lies of suicide with articles written by “experts” aka the criminals in the police branch who destroyed the evidence, is a crime at least in the eyes of God.
—Sr. Abhaya’s father has filed a petition against the Knanaya diocese for trying to manipulate the truth. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the money and influence as the Kottoor family. However, the majority of us Knanayas are aware of the injustice and continue to pray for Sr. Abhaya’s soul and God’s intervention. At this point, only God can outpower the Knanaya diocese.
Mr. Santhomas, please remember that there is not even a case put up by CBI that church authorities have meddled with the investigation. The only suspicion as revealed by the media is that the people are not telling the truth. Perhaps they may not be aware. To stand false testimony in a murder case is graver than to destroy evidence in such a case. Perhaps now people have become more God fearing for the sake of tarnishing his church.
I understand what you are trying to say, Jose Thomas. When I say church authorities, I mean their connection with those in politics. Please look into the ties between Knanaya clergy, members of the judiciary, and members of Kerala congress. I do not blame the CBI for wanting to have an unbiased objective judge serving the bench. I am not saying the Knanaya Church and each and every priest, nun, and member is to blame for any coverup. However, there are those with their vested interests, setting off such an impetus.
