CBI cracks the Abhaya code, priests, nun booked

Kochi, Wednesday, November 19, 2008: The CBI Kochi unit today made a landmark arrest in connection with the murder of Sister Abhaya. Father Jose Puthrukayil, and Father Thomas Kottoor both of whom who had undergone narco analysis test and brain mapping test earlier were summoned by CBI yesterday. The priests will be produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate today afternoon.

The lawyers of both the priests have confirmed the arrest. According to sources both the priests were arrested on the basis of the statements given by Sanju P Mathew a person living next to Pious X convent in Kottayam.

Sources tell us that both the priests are right now undergoing interrogation in Kochi.

The arrest was made by the CBI Kochi unit, which took charge this month after several CBI teams successively failed to crack the 1992 murder case. The Kerala High Court had last month rapped the investigating agency over the slow progress in its probe and asked the Kerala unit of the CBI to take over. The judge asked the new team to submit its first information report to the court in 45 days and submit the first full progress report of the investigation before Feb 4 next year.

In November 1996, the CBI concluded that the death was a homicide but the murderer remained untraced. The Kerala Police had earlier termed the case a suicide.

Public interest in the case was re-ignited in April last year after a newspaper reported that Abhaya’s medical reports were tampered with at a chemical laboratory in state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

This is the first time since sixteen years arrests have been made in the sensational murder case of Sister Abhaya, a resident of Pious X Hostel who was found dead March 27, 1992.

However, the church has so far refused to comment on the latest developments of events.

Kottayam diocese is a corrupt one. Despite the fingers were pointing to Kottoor in this case from the begining, he has been promoted to Chancellor which I gather is second in the hirearchy. Worse, as often is the case, he has been sent abroad by projecting as if he is most suitable to serve the diety there while the main reason was for protecting him from layman here. Again another instance for “crime rewards”.

Lust can make anybody commit a crime and these priests are only criminals but for supressing the case for 16 years lot of corrupt politicians and police were benefitted

Hats off to CBI. Atleast after 16 years justice has won. But will these three culprits remain behind the bars or again roam about as if nothing has happened?

Its good to see that CBI had managed to make some inroads in this case which is pending for more than one and half decade, but very sad to note the way media puts pressure on the WITNESS by repeatedly flashing his name and also shows his house etc , this is really putting his life in danger. Media should understand the agony and trauma the guy had gone through for last 16 years. With no fault in him why should we punish him like this. There is a serious lapse from sleuth’s side by releasing the witness name to the outside world.

let this be a lesson for all the bloody people who punk in the shadow of religion and divinity.

Court should not only punish those who did this crime, but all those who were trying to save the culprits. Those police officials and earlier investigating teams who failed to solve the case should be interrogated.Investigation should reach the root of the crime and should punish all those associated with it.

whenever the Abhaya case was in the news the church releases “idayalekhanam” to divert attention and to please the Political Protectors at Delhi and kerala as an act of “UPAKARASMARANA”.A nun- The bride of the lord -has been killed at a place where she should get the best protection. The investigating agencies had reported that it was a murder, but evidence has been destroyed. It is alarming that the church had not issued a single “Idayalekhanam” asking the authorities to book the culprit. Instead it issued a lot of “Idayaleknam” on so many non-issues.Why? it is Thought provoking. Now with the arrest of the Priests the “sabha”stood naked before the people of Kerala. The value system in the sabha has given way to all sorts of ‘thinmakal’ The mask of morality and all other preaches of Value system had fallen down cutting a sorry figure in the hearts of the people by trying to protect the murderers through all ways including bribing, political intervention , corruption and blackmailing which were not expected from the diocee. Shame!!! Shame!!! Shame!!! We are eagerly waitng for the response of the “Punyathmakkal”

We all know that Jesus Christ had led a life of simplicity. But the priesthood which took over the legacy of Christ has miserably in upholding the high ideals set by the Lord, say Christ. It has been proved time and again that the priests are the greatest ennimies of Jesus Christ. Just as the Marxists, the priests also try to hoodwink the general public. Otherwise what on earth made the clergy try to protect the real crimals???pl answer………

All institutions are alike, whether it is political, religious or commercial including news medea. They mutually support to further their cause since everybody who is in top of the hirearchy knows that the followers or in general the common men can always be brain washed by their propoganda and misinformation and by creating confusion. Ironically the arrested persons knew well that they hurted the pious diety and did not trust them that is why their advocates are all “heathen”. Also as every wise men know, religion is just a tool for atheist to use ‘poor’people and all the three in their heart are atheist though they pretend contrary not only for just living but to live in ‘rich’. Many tried their best, includiong K M Mani who survives by ‘condescending’ and there by having a large ‘followers’.But there are always some spirited people, who are demoralised by instituionlism, who eventually manage to penetrate through them.

I also want to say another aspect of this case which non catholics rarely understand. The celibacy of nuns and priests and their pious living is way different from other religious order that is why the top brass of the diocese tried their best to coverup this case, which in a different prespective is just a common killing. Also the cause for the killing is trivial: witnessing a sexcapades which is way too common and not worth mentioning in a general prespective but very imporatant and ‘relegiously prohibited’ that forced the trio to kill the witness.

Finally some result in a long drawn out and throughly beaten up case. I hope the church doesnt whip up a communal frenzy over this (i seriously doubt that though)..they should just let the law take its course…which it has now…. and i do hope that this does not bring on another spate of those horrendous suresh gopi movies…

Atlast truth came out.But I am very doubtful about whether the culprits could be get punishment.Since that witness can be influenced by the church(We know how can and how far these political rather than religious body can do to the mankind..)
Catholic Church is the Greatest Enemy of Jesus and His Teaching..Still now they do not let the court decide the matter..they say that the culprits are innocent..Court will decide that maater..

    SABHA rakshappedaan onneyullu maargam…

first its not the CBI to be congragulated, they investigated this with 13 teams for15 yrs but first the high court, judge ramkumar for his strong stand, bcos of which CBI was forced to act, then jomon who was following up this case for all these years, abayas father and Last but most importantly The indian express which showed the guts to publish the tampering of the forensic report which started the re probe again .now whatever the result of the trial people atleast have got to know the people behind this and why this could not be proved these many years. now a hunt must be made for all those people who worked behind the scenes and helped to destroy evidence and delay justice

Now you see there will be idayalekhanams and viswasa prakyabhana rallies all over kerala, to keep people in good faith, but lemme tell you my faith in jesus christ is strong as rock, but just don’t believe in Thiru Sabha, the catholic church. In fact, all institutionalized religions are bad

So far the sabha was trying to influence the investigating authorities through political as well as money power whih against the teachings of Christ. Now when the culprits are arrested the sabha questions the Investigating Authority. They knew better how this agencies are vulnerable to political pressure. but the arrest by the CBI under judicious pressure happened when the very same political party is controlling the CBI who protected them so far .Why the diocee is issuing a single word against the murder of an innocent nun in a convent. Why no protests. why no pastoral letters. Was she not a nun of the Sabha. Whose interest is protecting by the Diocee by trying to protect these criminals in Holy dress.

I’m very proud of the investigating officers who showed their guts to bring the truth to the people.
Not only should the culprits be punished but those who helped them hide the truth for 16yrs.

Regarding the comments about church supporting the accused, being a Catholic church follower and knowing well about the people and media in India, I will never blame the chruch for protecting the accused. Instead the accused should show up their belief in church by confessing to the people.
Infact that’s what Jesus taught, confess your sins and you will be forgiven.

  • Mathew Varghese : on November 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

I wonder how all other teams were investigated the matter of Abhaya case..by enjoying the common mans money as salary. All the culprits will try their best to save from their case. It is reasonable. The punishment is required for the one who tried to make them escape so far, because they spoiled the evidences. Hence now also a lot of chances to escape the culprits from the court by providing costly advocates in the supreme court.

I think Sr.Abhaya become a saint in near future. May be she murdered for the TRUTH. There is no official church announcement for a prayer request for this nun. Please pray for Sr. Abhay to become a saint. Please pray for Sr. Abyay’s family. St. Alphonsama please for Sr. Abyay!

I think it is high time that the Catholic Church should look into the very reasons for the Knanite Church to exist, as a separate entity. It should be, in some way, monitored more thouroughly.

In this Church, as everyone is related to one another, as they marry only from within (for the last 2000 years), like Parsis, etc., the tendency to protect (even culprits) to save ‘family honour’ is very strong. I am not saying, that all exhibit this tendency in this Church - there are many honourable exceptions, but the tendency is still strong.

I HOPE THE UNIVERSAL APOSTOLIC CATHOLIC CHURCH (THE VATICAN, to be precise) TAKES NOTE - THESE ARE WARNING SIGNS THAT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY …………

They are accused. It should prove in the court. One question is there where is Sanju..? Media not able to contact him. Past 16 years CBI questioning hm. I don’t know what evidence they got this time. I think due to pressure he made this statement. There is something wrong in the caseMay be they did the crime. I am not they are innocen or not. But Sanju’s statements are unreliable. I am also from kottayam staying near to that place. His main statement is that that night he is studying in his terrace. 16 years b4 there is no terrace. ooditta oru veedayirunnu athu

Trust that CBI investigate to the minute details and find the truth in this case as well as in other cases such as Lavlin and hope that the names of the culprits of all these cases including the old Bofors case is reveled to public eye and the involved were served with severe punishments.

Deepesh, you said it, “Seminariyil cherum munpe Variyudakkanam”. Vathikan should change their system. All priests and nuns should get married before getting into priesthood OR they should be allowed to join Seminaries after the age of 30-35 not before that. By that age they will get enough maturity to decide whether to go for priesthood or to go for a married life. Otherwise illicit activities & crimes will continue in your convents. I doubt whether Jesus advised anyone to be a bachelor OR spinster for religious service.

Shame on you Kottayam Sabha members. You are arranging group prayers for the three criminals, you do not pray for the soul of Sr.Abhaya.
