Thiruvananthapuram, Wednesday, November 05, 2008: Earlier the letter “T” in Kerala stood for ‘Tourism’ but it seems now it has been replaced by ‘Terrorism’ for all the wrong reasons. Ever since the presence of Keralite youth in the insurgence activities of Kashmir were confirmed, the presence of Kashmiris and their activities in Kovalam have become a cause of concern for the natives. According to them, the laid back approach of police and inefficiency to collect the whereabouts of the Kashmiris who have set up handicrafts business here have increased their concern.

Today, there are over 180 Kashmiri traders selling handicrafts at the international tourist destination and only very few are making profitable business here. But during the arrival of peak season, the Kashmiris take shops for lease from natives for high amount, which too raises questions regarding the source of income for these Kashmiris. The locals allege that behind the pretension of handicrafts sales most of the shops indulge in illicit activities.

While most Kashmiri traders in Kerala have been in the handicraft business for decades, it’s the newer entrants who are suddenly under scrutiny.

Locals also alleged that with the tourism season fast nearing the police’s decision to implement identification card for traders would only provide little help, as the sales boys working here have no identification proof.
