Shillong, Sunday 2 November 2008: The world’s largest ‘jalebi’ was fried by a local confectioner here and found its place in the Limca Book of Records.
The huge ‘jalebi’, large enough to cover a human body, is 75 inches in diameter and weigh about 15 kg, the confectioner Kailash Verma said.
It was fried in a specially fabricated ‘karhai’ by as many as six cooks with the support of 14 others who used 50 litre of vegetable oil, 3 kg of flour and 30 litre of sugar syrup, Verma, proprietor of Delhi Mistan Bhandar, which is celebrating its platinum jubilee with the feat, said.
The event was one of the highlights of the annual Autumn Festival organised here by the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum which kicked off with a gala carnival and funfair.
Officials of the Limca Book of Records had entrusted State Tourism Minister Conrad Sangma and GOC of 101 Area Army Maj Gen K S Sethi to act as adjudicators. They confirmed the record.
Shillong had made its way to the Guinness Book during the previous two Autumn Festivals for the largest drum and guitar ensembles.
Over 15 colourful floats representing various institutions and over 10 contingents of different tribes of the Northeast participated in a parade organised on the inaugural day of the nine-day festival. Various competitions, musical shows and rural marts were also organised.
